Turbonilla aquilonaria View in CoL n. sp. ( Figs. 1517 View FIGURES 15 17 )
Description: Shell tall, strictly conical; color milkywhite. Teleoconch whorls almost flatsided. Suture shallow, straight, and oblique. Protoconch heterostrophic helicoidal, diameter 270 m in holotype. Axial ribs low, straight, orthocline or slightly opisthocline; 25 ribs on body whorl of holotype ending abruptly at periphery of last whorl; interspaces slightly wider than ribs. Spiral sculpture absent. Base rounded and smooth. Aperture rhomboid. Columella straight, without fold. Outer lip thin. No umbilical fissure.
Dimensions: Holotype with 9 teleoconch whorls; height 4.7 mm; width 1.5 mm.
Type material: Holotype: UFPE 4443; Paratypes: MNHN; ZMA Moll. 4.02.0 18., MORG 41059, IBUFRJ 12705, MNRJ 9826, ANSP 410304. All paratypes intertidal, North coast of Brazil, F. Maestrati coll., 19841989.
Type locality: 08º10’30”S 34º42’01”W, intertidal, near Cabo de Santo Agostinho, Pernambuco State, northeast coast of Brazil.
Distribution: Ranging from Maranhão State (north Brazilian coast 02ºS) to Pernambuco State (northeast Brazilian coast 08ºS).
Etymology: From aquilonaria (L.) = from the north, referring to its collection localities off the northern coast of Brazil.
Remarks: Turbonilla aquilonaria n. sp. is similar to T. uruguayensis Pilsbry, 1897 ( Pilsbry 1897: pl. 6, figs. 810; Figueiras & Sicardi 1974: pl. 19, fig. 243; Pimenta 1999: fig. 129 [holotype]) and T. rhabdota ( Watson, 1886) ( Watson 1886: pl. 32, fig. 4;Pimenta & Absalão in press: figs. 1922; Barros et al. 2001: fig. 2c), sharing the same general form and profile, type and number of axial ribs, and type of protoconch. However, T. aquilonaria can be distinguished by its size, whorl form, and geographical distribution. Turbonilla aquilonaria is smaller than T. uruguayensis and occurs from Pernambuco State (8ºS) northwards. Turbonilla uruguayensis is a southeastern species, extending northwards only to southern Bahia (16ºS). Also, in T. aquilonaria the height/width whorl ratio is greater than that of T. uruguayensis . Turbonilla rhabdota occurs in the West Indies and potentially also in Brazil, but is more slender and has fewer axial ribs with wider interspaces than in T. aquilonaria .
