Replaced synonym of: Varronia lineata L. (1759) , nom. illeg.

Lectotype (Johnston in J. Arnold Arbor. 30: 94. 1949): [icon] " Ulmi angustifoliae facie Baccifera Jamaicensis foliis superne scabris, subtus villosis, floribus flavis perpusillis, fructu botryoide monospermo " in Plukenet, Phytographia: t. 328, f. 5. 1694; Almag. Bot.: 393. 1696. - Typotype: Herb. Sloane 102: 132 ( BM-SL) .

Current name: Cordia linnaei Stearn ( Boraginaceae ).

Note: Stearn (in J. Arnold Arbor. 52: 630. 1971) argued that the Sloane plate must be taken as the lectotype but the Plukenet plate, previously designated as type by Johnston, is original material and this earlier choice therefore has priority. Taroda & Gibbs (in Notes Roy. Bot. Gard. Edinburgh 44: 134. 1986) provide an extensive discussion.
