status

Asplenium auriculatum Sw., Kongl. Vetensk. Acad. Handl. 1817 View in CoL (1): 68. 1817.

Range:— Antilles; Mexico to Bolivia ( CH, CO, LP, SC) and Brazil.

Ecology:— Common; mainly epiphytic, rarely on rocks, in humid forests; (200)500–2700(3000) m. Propagates vegetatively through root buds. In a study in La Paz, terrestrial individuals of the species were found mainly on rocky ridges with poorly developed, nutrient-poor soils ( Jones et al. 2011).

Notes:— Usually recognized by its fleshy, yellow-green blades and iridescent, golden brown, long-ciliate rhizome scales. Asplenium salicifolium has similar scales, but that species is larger in all aspects, and often has 2-forked veins. Asplenium auriculatum is very variable, with narrow to broad pinnae with obtuse to long-acuminate apices.
