Range:— Jamaica; Hispaniola; southern USA to Argentina and Chile; Africa; Madagascar; Mascarenes; Hawaii. In Bolivia, in CH, CO, LP, SC, and TA.

Ecology:— Common; saxicolous and terrestrial in forests and thickets, on or among rocks, in crevices of rock cliffs, and occasionally on dry rocky soil; (900) 1300–4350 m.

Notes:— This species is part of a species complex with apomixis and polyploidy ( Dyer et al. 2012, 2013). Used as a diaphoretic in traditional Andean medicine ( Tryon 1959).
