Kotlyar (2011) described the species M. falsidicus from the northern Atlantic Ocean, where it was sampled between 34º N and 58º N. According to Kotlyar (2011), this species was previously defined as Melamphaes microps (Günther, 1878) , which is probably a variant of M. falsidicus . The records of the species M. microps off the Azores and in Madeira should probably be considered as M. falsidicus .
