– Galapagos shark; Tubarão-dos-Galápos ②, ③

According to Ebert & Stehmann (2013), the species Carcharhinus obscurus is very closely related to this species ( C. galapagensis ) and they are difficult to distinguish from each other. Recent molecular studies suggest that these two species may in fact be a single one, with one of the two forms being found far from landmasses ( C. galapagensis ) and the other one ( C. obscurus ) occurring in association with continental shelves and upper slopes (G. Naylor, pers comm. in Ebert & Stehmann 2013). Studies are currently ongoing to determine the relationship between these two species.
