6. Stoebe gomphrenoides Bergius (1767: 336) . Seriphium corymbiferum Linnaeus (1771: 518) , nom. illeg. superfl. Type:— SOUTH AFRICA. Wänman 199 (SBT herb no 108!, holotype).

Tall, very sparsely branched, erect shrubs up to 0.6 m tall. Branches long, straight and flexible, young branches developing from below the inflorescence of the previous season, ascending. Leaves up to 10 × 2–3 mm, tightly adpressed, not twisted, elliptic-oblong, concave, not imbricate, persistent for 2 seasons; tips acuminate to mucronate; abaxial surface covered by a matted layer of long, flexible trichomes that tease out along the margins to appear ciliate; adaxial surface tomentose, hairs twisted in loose spirals. Synflorescences terminal, globose heads of up to 35 capitula, up to 20 mm in diam.; subtended by a rosette of leaves. Capitula homogamous, discoid, 1- flowered. Receptacle reduced to short stalks on an inflated stem. Involucral bracts 6–10, up to 6 mm long, pastel yellow, tips acute, hooded. Florets bisexual, up to 4 mm long with narrow erect corolla lobes up to 1 mm long. Stamens 5; apical appendages acuminate; basally tailed. Style bifid, slightly swollen at the base. Nectaries present. Cypselas small, brown, tomentose; hairs long adpressed, tips rounded. Pappus setae up to 5, free, caducous, lower third bare, upper two-thirds densely plumose, plumes rigid, relatively short. Flowering November and December, occasionally in January.

Distribution and habitat: —Restricted to the Malmesbury district in the Western Cape. Figure 24 .

Ecology: —Sandveld between elevations of 100–200 m.

Conservation status: —Endangered.
