Distribution: Honduras to Jalisco ( Mexico).
Conservation: IUCN – Lower Risk (lc).
Discussion: Subgenus Orthogeomys . Burt and Stirton (1961) and Hall (1981) included pygacanthus in grandis ; Russell (1968 a) considered it a distinct species.
