Material examined. Holotype male, North Queensland, Fishery Falls, S of Cairns, 17°11’S 145°52’E, 10–11 Nov 2007, light trap, A. Cairns, A. Wells, W. Cairns. Paratype male, same data as holotype.
Diagnosis. This species is placed with Orthotrichia gracilis Wells in that it has a pair of long black socketed spines on abdominal tergite VIII. It is most similar to Orthotrichia amnica Wells , described from Kambolgie Creek in Kakadu National Park, Northern Territory, but it is distinguished from O. amnica by having a pair of triangular extensions, rather than 1, subapically on tergite X, the left one well sclerotised, the right pale; the fused dorsal process of each inferior appendage is angled so that it appears strongly asymmetric; and the inferior appendages are almost globular, each with a stout hook dorsally. The form of tergite X is similar to that of O. orbostensis Wells , which lacks the dorsal spines on tergite VIII.
Description. Male: Anterior wing length 2.1 mm. Antennae damaged. Male genitalia ( Fig. 8 View FIGURES 7, 8 ): Abdominal sternite VII bearing median process with tuft of stout apically truncate setae. Abdominal segment VIII bearing pair of unequal-length, black socketed spines towards distal margin. Segment IX asymmetrical internally, produced proximally at left side, dorsally appearing fused with tergite X and bearing pair of broad flat bladelike spines; tergite irregular distally, with pair of triangular processes laterally, left process appearing part of fused sclerotised spine. Inferior appendages sclerotised, ventrally globose, each with hooked process dorsomedially, dorsal process of each inferior appendage in form of single, obliquely angled, narrow plate with pair of long setae apically. Aedeagus about twice length of genital capsule, slender. Paramere elongate straight, slender.
Etymology. Named for Andi Cairns who organised and led the field trip on which this species was collected.
