Not Notophyllum (Hesperophyllum) tectum: Banse, 1972: 195–197 View in CoL , gure 2B–F (5 Notophyllum imbricatum Moore, 1906 View in CoL ).

Material examined. Type ( MCZ 26802, single mounted parapodium), Laguna Beach , CA, USA .

Remarks. Hesperophyllum tectum is known only from the original description and a subsequent re-description by Banse (1972), the type material consists of a slide with a single parapodium. The combination of a dorsal acicula and a capillary chaeta, the broad dorsal cirrus, the ventral cirrus with the longitudinal axis obliquely orientated, and the rostrum of chaetal shafts with a large number of teeth, shows that it belongs to Notophyllum . The attened, rather than in ated, ventral tentacular cirri described by Chamberlin may constitute a unique feature within Notophyllum , but must be veri ed by further investigation of additional specimens from the type locality.

Banse’s (1972) redescription was based on a specimen ( MCZ 19663) from San Juan Islands, Washington, in addition to the type. Our examination of Banse’s specimen indicates that it belongs to Notophyllum imbricatum Moore, 1906 , based on the presence of unique proboscoideal hook-shaped papillae. The ventral tentacular cirri of Banse’s specimen has the normal, asymmetrical shape present in other Notophyllum , and are in ated, rather than attened as stated.

As H. tectum is currently insu ciently known, we refer to it as Notophyllum incertae sedis.
