Herbs up to 120 cm tall, stems mostly solitary, rarely branched at base, erect, herbaceous, hirsute, non-glandular. Leaves sessile, petiolate, petioles 2–8 mm long, broadly ovate, 20–90 × 12–45 mm, margin crenate to doubly serrate, 13–26 teeth per side, teeth 0.4–5 mm long; apex obtuse, base rounded; membranous, pilose, non-glandular. Inflorescence a raceme, erect, pedicels thin and slightly curved, 9–21 mm long. Bracts equal along inflorescence, sessile, linear or narrowly ovate to ovate, 10–55 × 7–25 mm, margin serrate to doubly serrate, apex obtuse, base rounded to auriculate. Calyx campanulate without dots on the surface, 10–26 × 5–17 mm, lobes ovate to slightly spatulate, 5–12 × 3–5 mm, apex aciculate, pilose, non-glandular. Corolla funnelform, prominently curved and ventricose, 25–70 × 9–22 mm, upper lip 8–30 × 9–20 mm, lower lip 5–26 × 3–5 mm, arching forward, lobes 4–6 × 2.5–5 mm; orange to red, pubescent, non-glandular. Stamens exserted 4, filaments up to 65 mm long, anthers 3–5 mm long, style up to 77 mm long, stigma capitate, 2 mm width. Capsule ovoid, 8–15 × 7–10 mm, glabrous. Seeds not seen.
Etymology: —The name of the species refers to its large flowers.
Distribution and habitat: —This species is distributed from Mexico to Guatemala. In Mexico, it can be found in the states of Chiapas, Guerrero, Guanajuato, Jalisco, Oaxaca, Querétaro, and Veracruz in elevations from 2500 to 3000 m ( Fig. 9E View FIGURE 9 ). The species can be located mainly in pine-oak, pine ( Pinus patula Schlechtendal & Chamisso (1831: 354) , and Abies Miller (1754 : s.n.) forests in eastern Mexico.
Phenology: —The flowering and fruiting season of this species occur from August to January. The peak of collections is from August.
Nomenclatural notes: —The original description of Lamourouxia macrantha ( Martens & Galeotti 1845) cited the collections Galeotti 994 and Galeotti 1104 without herbaria location. From both collections, the specimen with representative structures as mature and open flowers and best preservation is Galeotti 1104 BR0000005424023, designated as lectotype.
