Edessa rugifera Stål, 1872: 53 ; Lethierry & Severin, 1893: 194 (catalog); Kirkaldy, 1909: 164 (catalog). Holotype female. “ Brasilia Borealis” “Amazon, Stevens” (NHRM). Examined.

Material examined. BRAZIL. Amazonas: ɗ, Coari, rio Urucu, prox IMT – 1, 4º49’33’’S / 65º01’49’’W, 17– 29/IX/1995, P.F. Bührnheim e N.O. Bührnheim, N.O. Aguiar e F. A. Fé col. ( CZPB); ɗ, Tefé, locação São Mateus, 4º43’24’’S / 65º40’6’’W, 7–16/IX/1994, P.F. Bührnheim et al. Col. ( CZPB). Mato Grosso: Ψ, Sinop, BR 163, Km 496, X. 1975, O. Roppa col.; Edessa rugifera Stål, 1872 comp. w. type Fernandes, J.A.M. 1999 ( UFRG); ɗ, Sinop, BR 163, Km 496, III. 1976, O. Roppa col. ( RMNH).

Measurements. Total length: 11.7–13.6; head length: 1.6–1.7; head width: 1.9–2.1; pronotal width: 8.1– 10.0; abdominal width: 5.4–6.3.

Jugae without punctures ahead of the tylus. Rostrum reaching anterior third of mesosternum. Pronotum with small and shallow punctures. Humeral angles short and somewhat anteriorly directed (fig. 30); distal part light to dark brown with punctures smaller than those of the pronotum. Thoracic pleura without transversal dark stripes or with faded ones. Anterior projection of metasternal process very short, tip rounded, lateral lobes large and prominent (figs. 5–6). Scutellum not punctured on distal part. Membrane of hemelytra light brown.

Male (figs. 1–3). Pygophore somewhat compressed. Dorsal rim of pygophore concolorous with dorsal surface. Posterolateral angles developed and rounded (figs. 1, 3). Ventral rim with large concavity, lobes small and thin, not reaching level of posterolateral angles and quite distant from the midline (fig. 3). Genital cup processes reaching dorsal rim (fig. 2). Paramere large, surpassing posterior limits of pygophore, lateral lobes wide and long but twisted posteriorly (figs. 1, 3). Proctiger long and surpassing ventral rim (fig. 3), dorsal concavities small.

Female (fig. 4). Gonocoxites 8 with distal margin concave and a small tooth at posterolateral angle. Laterotergites 8 with posterior angle developed. Gonocoxites 9 almost entirely exposed. Laterotergites 9 with rounded apex and passing band uniting laterotergites 8.

Comments. This species can be distinguished from the others by the following characters: jugae without punctures apically. Small punctures on pronotum. Stripes on pleura faded or absent. Posterolateral angle of pygophore developed. Ventral rim of pygophore with lobes small, thin, and quite distant from midline. Paramere large and surpassing posterior limits of pygophore. Distal margin of gonocoxites 8 concave; laterotergites 9 just passing band uniting laterotergites 8. This species could be confused with E. nigrolimbata because both have the anterior projection of the metasternal process short and truncate; humeral angle short and somewhat anteriorly directed; ventral rim with a large medial concavity; lobes of ventral rim small and thin not reaching posterolateral angles; proctiger long surpassing ventral rim; and posterior angles of abdominal segment VII going far beyond the level of the laterotergites 8. However, the comments above separate this two species.

Distribution (fig. 35). BRAZIL: Amazonas, Mato Grosso.
