The genus was erected for species of Lecanora s. lat. with a reddish brown subhymenial layer. The thallus is white, pale to dark grey or yellowish green and contains atranorin and/or chlorinated xanthones, rarely also usnic acid. Apothecia are adnate to distinctly sessile, with a pale yellowish green to pale brown or deep, reddish brown to almost black disc. The thalline exciple usually contains large crystals that are insoluble in K, occasionally also small crystals that are soluble in K. Conidia are bacilliform.
