( Fig. 5A–B View FIGURE 5 )
Thallus saxicolous, thick, contiguous, rimose-areolate, fissures of secondary areoles with strongly serrate, interlocking edges; surface white to creamish beige, smooth, epruinose to roughened, lacking soredia; prothallus a thin compact, blackened line, most pronounced where different thalli meet. Apothecia not seen. Pycnidia abundant, immersed, ostiole blackened (reddish brown pigment), ±broadened, in appearance similar to immersed, cryptolecanorine apothecia, wall hyaline; conidia shortly filiform, ±curved, 13–18 × ca. 1.0–1.2 µm (n = 30).
Chemistry: Thallus cortex and medulla P–, K–, KC+ pink, C+ pink, UV– (dull yellow); containing lobaric acid [major]; [specimen analyzed with TLC: Aptroot, A. 64396 (CDS 30962)].
Ecology and Distribution: Only one specimen currently known, from an exposed cliff at the shore of North Plaza Island .
Notes: This single specimen is not formally described here, because no apothecia were found. Morphologically the abundantly pycnidiate thallus closely resembles specimens of L. legalloana , L. subimmersa and L. prosecha , but it contains lobaric acid as the only secondary metabolite.
Specimen examined. ECUADOR. GALÁPAGOS: Plaza Norte (near Santa Cruz), 0˚34’47’’S, 90˚9’47’’W, 1 m alt., coastal zone, vertical, S-exposed cliffs and on top of island, inpenetrable thicket of Grabowskia boerhaaviaefolia and Scutia spicata var. pauciflora with occasional Opuntia cacti in between, lava, on rock, 21-Feb-2006, Aptroot, A. 64396 (CDS 30962).
