Type species.
Heterospilus falcatus Marsh.
Diagnosis.
Small size, 2.5-3.0 mm; ovipositor curved up and modified apically with valves expanded and sickle-shaped and sheaths expanded; fore wing vein 2RS absent, vein r slightly longer than vein 3RSa, first subdiscal cell open at apex and bottom, vein 2-1A absent; hind wing vein SC+R absent, hind wing of male with stigma.
Distribution.
Neotropical, Palaearctic, Oriental, Australian and Afrotropical Regions.
Biology.
One species has been reared from Scolytidae .
Comments.
This genus is distinguished from all other heterospiline braconids by the unusual shape of the ovipositor that is curved up and sickle-shaped at the tip. Belokobylskij 2006 presents a key and descriptions to the world species and separates them into two subgenera. The Neotropical Region contains one described species occurring in Costa Rica (new record), Venezuela and Brazil.
