Distribution in New Zealand: North of New Zealand (Tattersall W.M. 1923)

Ecology: Mesopelagic, deep water ( Mauchline & Murano 1977).

Remarks: This is the type species of the genus. E. typica closely resembles E. zurstrasseni . To distinguish the two species, Pillai (1973) mentions the long ocular papillae and the presence of two groups of ocelli in E. typica compared to a single group in E. zurstrasseni .
