Hierbas anuales o perennes. Hojas opuestas, rarísima vez alternas, glabras o pelosas, indivisas, pinnatipartidas o pinnatisectas. Corola bilabiada, con lóbulos del labio superior más desarrollados que los del inferior, verdoso-pardusca, pardo violeta, purpúrea , rojiza, ferrugínea, rosada, anaranjada o amarillento-verdosa. Estaminodio presente.
