Heterotropus Loew, 1873: 180 View in CoL . Type species: Heterotropus albidipennis Loew, 1873 View in CoL .
Species of Heterotropus spp. are particularly well represented in the material examined and including a new species, described below. The opportunity is also taken to provide a new key to southern African species and to describe the hitherto undescribed male of H. munroi Bezzi from a series of specimens of both sexes collected in Namibia and Botswana, preserved in BMNH.
Yeates & Irwin (1992) described three new species from the Northern Cape. These are closely similar in shape, colour pattern and the characters of the genitalia; notably the aedeagus is trifid, the gonostylus has a large median arm. On the other hand H. apertus Greathead , H. diamantis described below and H. munroi all differ in important characters from the other three species suggesting that they are not closely related to them or each other.
