Antennal tubercles with dense, somewhat thick pubescence, whitish on some areas, mostly yellowish-brown on others. Wide central area of postclypeus with pubescence as on frons posterocentrally, almost glabrous on remaining surface, and long, erect yellowish-brown seta on each side; sides of postclypeus glabrous. Labrum with short, sparse yellowish pubescence laterally, long, erect yellowish-brown setae on posterior half, and short fringe of yellow setae on anterior margin. Etymology. Named for the country of Panama where the type was collected.
Remarks. Leptostylus panamensis sp. nov. is similar to L. notaticollis Bates, 1880 (see photographs on Bezark 2022), but differs as follows: elytra about 4.3 times prothoracic length; scape not projected on apex of ventral surface; antennomere III distinctly longer than basal prothoracic width; and yellowish-white pubescent band on the posterior half of the elytra not oblique laterally. In L. notaticollis , elytra about 3.55 times prothoracic length, scape projected on apex of ventral surface, antennomere III about as long as basal prothoracic width, and yellowish-white pubescent band on the posterior half of the elytra oblique from sides to suture. We don’t know the sex of the holotype of L. notaticollis . However, apparently it is a male and, if so, the antennomeres III and IV should be proportionally longer if it was the male of Leptostylus panamensis sp. nov., which is not the case. The female illustrated in Maes et al. (2010) as being L. notaticollis , apparently, is not of that species, although the general appearance is very similar. This is because the body appears to be slender and the prothorax proportionally smaller than in the holotype. These differences do not occur in other species of the genus (see, for example, L. retrorsus Bates, 1885 on Bezark 2022), and also in species of Leptostylopsis Dillon, 1956 . The new species differs from L. obliquatus Bates, 1880 (see photographs on Bezark 2022) especially by the absence of a dark band on the sides of the elytra (present in L. obliquatus ), and a yellowish-white pubescent band on the posterior half of the elytra not oblique laterally (oblique from sides to suture in L. obliquatus ); it differs from L. phrissominus Bates, 1885 (see photographs on Bezark 2022) especially by the apex of the scape and tibiae not blackish (blackish in L. phrissominus ), apex of the scape not projected ventrally (projected in L. phrissominus ), antennomeres III and IV proportionally longer (proportionally shorter in L. phrissominus ), and yellowish-white pubescent band on the posterior half of the elytra not oblique laterally (oblique from sides to suture in L. phrissominus ); L. panamensis sp. nov. also differs from L. laevicauda chiriquinus Bates, 1885 , especially by the antennomeres III and IV proportionally longer (shorter in L. laevicauda chiriquinus ).
