TYPE LOCALITY: "sur la côte du Brésil.", probably upper Amazon River .
DISTRIBUTION: Peru, Ecuador, Brazil, Bolivia, Venezuela, Columbia: Amazon, Negro, Mamore ( Bolivia), and Orinoco River systems.
STATUS: CITES - Appendix II; IUCN - Vulnerable.
SYNONYMS: boliviensis .
COMMENTS: Reviewed by Best and da Silva (1989). Includes boliviensis , see Casinos and Ocana (1979); but also see Pilleri and Gihr (1977), who considered it a distinct species.
