Cicindela formosa Say View in CoL – Big sand tiger beetle (S4)
This species was not encountered during our fieldwork and was not mapped from northern Ontario by Wallis (1961). Graves (1964) reported Cicindela formosa generosa Dejean from North
Bay (Nipissing District) based on a specimen at Carnegie University, and Lawton (2008) reported a collection from near Rushing River Provincial Park, Rainy River District ( Fig. 4 View Fig ).The Rushing River record belongs to the “manitoba” form, previously considered a separate subspecies (e.g., by Wallis 1961), but now it is generally included in C. formosa generosa (e.g., Pearson et al. 2015). Throughout its range in Ontario, C. formosa is likely restricted to dry, upland sandy areas with little to no low vegetation cover and no standing water (e.g., road cuts, sandy fields, shoreline dunes, or pine barrens) (Pearson et al. 2015).
No known copyright restrictions apply. See Agosti, D., Egloff, W., 2009. Taxonomic information exchange and copyright: the Plazi approach. BMC Research Notes 2009, 2:53 for further explanation.
