Froese & Pauly (2007) erroneously recorded Spicara maena Linnaeus, 1758 from Madeira, allegedly on the basis of Heemstra in Quéro et al. (1990: 769-770), who do not, however, include such a record.
Spicara smaris (Linnaeus, 1758) was erroneously recorded from Madeira by Heemstra in Quéro et al. (1990: 771-772) but not mentioned from Madeira by Tortonese in Whitehead et al. (1986: 911). Phil Heemstra (personal communication, 31 Jan. 2006) did not find any evidence that the species occurs at Madeira.
* Centracanthus cirrus Rafinesque-Schmaltz, 1810—Curled picarel
Spicara melanurus (Valenciennes, 1830) —Blackspot picarel
Recorded from Madeira by Tortonese in Whitehead et al. (1986: 909) under the name Pterosmaris melanurus , and by Heemstra in Quéro et al. (70-771) under the actual name Spicara melanurus . This tropical species has never been caught in the Canary Islands and there are no specimens in the MMF collection. We consider this a very doubtful record.
