Phalonidia manniana View in CoL (Fischer von Röslerstamm, 1839)

Cochylis manniana Fischer View in CoL von Röslerstamm, 1839: 134. Cochylis notulana Zeller, 1847: 745 View in CoL .

Redescription. Adult. Male ( Figs. 1 View FIGURES 1 A – 1 F C–F). Head: Cream-coloured. Antenna light brown, ciliate, cilia slightly shorter than diameter of shaft, minutely ciliate in female. Labial palpus 2 times diameter of eye, cream, second segment externally with brown suffusion. Thorax: Beige, tegulae suffused with grey. Legs cream, fore and mid legs externally flecked with grey. Wingspan (forewing length) 10.0–13.0 mm in males, 11.0–13.5 mm in females. Forewing ground colour cream; basal and sub-basal fasciae form fuscous patch on costal third, represented by ochreous suffusion in dorsal two thirds; median fascia brownish ochreous, slightly angled at one third from costa, suffused with blackish particularly in dorsal half and near costa; postmedian fascia ochreous, weak; pre-tornal spot black; subterminal fascia brownish ochreous with blackish admixture, becoming narrower towards tornus; terminal line light grey; veins in apical third darkened, giving this part of the wing a reticulate appearance; cilia cream; underside fuscous, 5-6 cream-coloured strigulae on costa in apical two fifths, basal third below cell cream, ochreous spot on cubital vein at one fifth from base. Hindwing grey, veins and sub-basal line darker, with some dark transverse streaks; cilia light grey, becoming whitish towards anal area; underside ground colour cream, but with extensive grey suffusion forming a reticulate pattern. Abdomen: Dorsally grey, ventrally cream, abdominal tuft light ochreous. Male genitalia ( Figs. 2 View FIGURES 2 E, 2F, 2G, 2H) with tegumen a wide arch; socii with broad base, weak, setose; median process of transtilla rather short and relatively broad; valva slender, cucullus tapering in proximal two thirds, parallel sided or slightly tapering in distal third, sacculus short, rounded, protruding; excavation between sacculus and cucullus shallow, juxta heart-shaped; phallus of even width, slightly s-shaped, with strongly sclerotised ventral plate; vesica with numerous denticles and one strong cornutus with large base. Female genitalia ( Fig. 3 View FIGURES 3 C) with papillae anales bandlike; eighth segment short; sterigma with large cup-shaped anterior part; ductus bursae broad, entirely membranous, not clearly separate from corpus bursae; corpus bursae with large anterior sclerite with a well sclerotised anterior edge and numerous spines, though fewer in posterior part. The exact position of the sclerite and spines inside the corpus bursae varies to some extent, depending on how the corpus bursae is compressed on the slide.

Variation. The extent of dark suffusion on both upperside and underside of the wings varies. The width of the median fascia shows some variation. Richardson (1890), who reared it from Mentha hirta Willd. (= M. x. dumetorum Schult.), wrote: “I find that this species varies considerably in its markings, especially as regards the dark central fascia”.

Diagnosis. In the past P. manniana has been confused with P. udana . For separation of the two, see the diagnosis of the latter.
