? Pandalopsis aleutica glabra View in CoL .—Birshtein & Zarenkov 1971: 441.
Material examined. CBM-ZC 13262, 2 ovigerous females (cl 31.7, 33.4 mm), Nemuro Strait, off Rausu, Shiretoko Peninsula, 700–1000 m, 6 December 2014, commercial gill net, coll. K. Matsuzaki; AMF-ZC 0 0 12, 3 ovigerous females (cl 31.4–33.2 mm), same data.
Colour in life ( Fig. 15 View FIGURE 15 ). Body and appendages entirely vermillion; on pleon, posterodorsal margins of pleomeres 2–5 slightly darker, forming obsolescent transverse bands.
Distribution. Known only from the Sea of Okhotsk; at depths of 515–1076 m.
Remarks. This species was first described as a subspecies of Pandalopsis aleutica Rathbun, 1902 (Kobjakova 1936a) . Since the original description, Russian authors (e.g., Kobjakova 1936b, 1937, 1958, Vinogradov 1950) repeatedly mentioned on this taxon on the basis of the original description. Hayashi (in Baba et al. 1986; 2008) and Komai & Amaoka (1989) reported on this species with newly collected specimens from the Sea of Okhotsk. Hayashi (in Baba et al. 1986) elevated the taxon to full specific status without much justification, but subsequent authors (e.g., Komai & Amaoka 1989; Komai 1994; De Grave & Fransen 2011) have followed his action. Indeed, P. glabra differs from P. aleutica in the glabrous carapace and the lack of a conspicuous lateral carina on the carapace. In the description of P. aleutica, Rathbun (1904) clearly stated: “Surface of carapace covered with a short and soft pubescence. Branchial region traversed by a curved longitudinal ridge.” There is no doubt that the two taxa are specifically distinct.
As Komai (1994) argued, P. glabra and P. rubra Komai, 1994 are very similar for one another, but the latter species seems to occur at greater depths than P. glabra (cf. Komai 1994, 2008; Komai & Komatsu 2009; Marin 2018). The record by Birshtein & Zarenkov (1971; as P. aleutica glabra ) from the Pacific side of the Kuril Islands at depth of 1580 m might actually represent P. rubra . Consequently this record is questionably included in the synonymy.
The present specimens agree with the previous accounts of Pandalopsis glabra by Kobjakova (1936), Komai
& Amaoka (1989), Komai (1994) and Hayashi (2008). Morphological differentiation between P. glabra and P. rubra , discussed by Komai (1994), is well supported regarding to the present material. Hayashi (in Baba et al. 1986) described the number of accessory spiniform setae on the dactyli of pereopods 3–5 as six or seven, but the counts are too few for P. glabra , in which there are 12–14 accessory spiniform setae on those dactyli. Nevertheless, the figure showing a habitus in color (Hayashi, in Baba et al. 1986: fig. 78) agree well with P. glabra .
