I have found no descriptions of leaf mines for any Monoxia species , beyond the statement that those of Asteraceae-feeding larvae are “consistently simple, often inflated and sacculate, and about 1 cm long at completion” (Santiago-Blay 2004). To this I can add my observations of Atriplex prostrata Bouchér ex DC. (Amaranthaceae) leaves mined by M. angularis , which were collected in Lake County, California on 5 June 2013 (adult specimens in MLBM). I examined eight mined leaves, two of which included more than one mine. These were all full-depth blotches that contacted the leaf edge, each occupying little more than 1 cm 2; the largest measured 17 mm by 7 mm. Larvae were able to exit and establish new mines. The frass was elongate pellets, but rather than being scattered through the mine, these were mostly grouped in clumps or a solid central mass, with the bulk of the mine left clean and transparent ( Fig. 17 View Figs ). Pupation was outside the mines, in contrast to Santiago-Blay’ s (2004) observations of other Monoxia species.
