Conservation: CITES – Appendix I; U. S. ESA – Endangered; IUCN – Endangered as L. p. albescens , otherwise Least Concern.
Discussion: Placed in Leopardus by J. A. Allen (1919 b), Weigel (1961), Hemmer (1978), and Kratochvíl (1982 c). Reviewed by Murray and Gardner (1997). Synonyms allocated according to Cabrera (1958 b), Hall (1981), and Murray and Gardner (1997).
