(no genus) squanda; Beattie, 1976. Rhop. Direct., p. 263.
Type material. Telemiades squanda Evans, 1953was described based on seven males and one female from Brazil(Amazonas, Pará, Goiás, and Rio de Janeirostates), Bolivia, and Guyana. The male holotypeis from Sacuaresma [Saquarema], Rio de Janeiro, [ Brazil] and is deposited at the NHMUKwith the following labels: / Type [verso from the same label:] squandaEvans/ Brésil Prov. Rio JaneiroLaguna de Sacuaresma P. Germain Aout. Sept. 1884/ R. Oberthür Coll. Brit. Mus. 1931–136/ [label with genitalia attached] Ed/ 26/ BMNH(E) 1669623/.
Diagnosis.FW length: males 20–21 mm(n=5) and females 24–25 mm(n=5). Telemiades squandaresembles T. merisand T. trendabut is easily distinguished by DFW with purple reflection and the morphological pattern of male and female genitalias. T. squandadiffers from T. megallusby the absence of the spine–like developed projection in the valva, and from T. moaSiewert, Mielke & Casagrande, sp. nov.by the white patch in VHW.
Distribution. Telemiades squandais widely distributed in South America, with records in Peru, Bolivia, Guyana, Brazil, and Argentina. Taxonomic discussion. Telemiades squandawas erroneously associated with Telemiades purpurascens Mabille & Boullet, 1912[ Emmelus purpurascens] by Hayward (1947a, 1948, 1973) and Canals (2003). Emmelus purpurascensis phenotypically similar to T. squandabut can be readily distinguished by the yellowish coloration of the labial palps and the first pair of legs, in conjunction with the morphological pattern of the genitalia. The holotypeof T. squandais from Saquarema, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, while the paratypesare from Guyana, Boliviaand the Brazilian states of Amazonas, Pará and Goiás. The phenotype of the holotypediffers from the paratypesin the ground color and development of the apical hyaline spots in FW. The analysis of the genitalia of the paratypes(except the female from the Amazon) revealed no differences with respect to the holotype. It was not possible to dissect the female paratypefrom Ega [Tefé], Amazonas. However, two females (deposited in the DZUP) also from Amazonas, were dissected, and revealed the same features as the paratype, but distinct from the female of T. squandafrom Rio de Janeiro(same site as the holotype), and from the “ megallusgroup”. Therefore, the female from the Amazon may represent an undescribed species. The application of molecular tools for the correct pairing of these specimens is encouraged. Examined material.
