Diagnosis(males). Epandrial right posterior margin forming triangular projection. Right lobe of hypandrium large, bifurcated at apex.
Material examined. Holotype ♂, BRAZIL: São Paulo: Ribeirão Grande, Parque Estadual Intervales, Barra Grande, 10–13.xii.2000, Malaise trap, M.T. Tavares& team col. ( MZUSP). Paratypes: BRAZIL: 1♂, same data as holotype; 2♂, Espírito Santo, Santa Teresa, Estação Biológica Santa Lucia, 835 m, 19°58’18.6’’S 40°32’08.8’’W, 9–12.iv.2001, Malaise trap, C.O. Avezedo& team col. ( MZUSP)
Description. Male. Body length, 2.5–3 mm. Head. Frons dark brown, pubescent, without median furrow. Flagellomere 1 yellowish-brown, pubescent, oval. Arista pre-apical, pubescent. Palpus yellowish-brown, one lower genal and one upper genal small seta. Thorax. Scutum and pleural sclerites brown; anepisternum setulose dorsally, with one long seta; scutellum brown, with medial and posterior areas light brown. Legs yellowish-brown, median and hind femur light brown. Forefemur with ventral row of strong setae. Foretibia with two dorsal setae at basal third and an anterodorsal row of strong setae. Foremetatarsus ratio, 5.5. Midtibia with two anterodorsal and 3–4 posterodorsal setae ( Fig. 170). Hind femur swollen (height/length ratio, 0.41). Hind tibia with 2–3 anterodorsal and 5–6 posterodorsal setae ( Fig. 207). Wing. Costa0.48 of the wing length, other wing features as for the genus. Halter white. Abdomen. Tergites dark brown, with lighter posterior band. Hypopygium light brown ( Figs. 52–55). Medial process not bifurcated. Epandrial right posterior margin forming a triangular projection, without subepandrial process. Right lobe of hypandrium large, bifurcated at apex; left lobe small, shifted laterally to the left. Hypoproct with seven setae. Phallus( Figs. 274–275). Basiphallus without dorsal process. Core plate membranous. Epiphallus ending free, covered with thin, transparent scales. Ventral plate long, connected to the right arm. Female. Unknown. Geographic distribution. Eastern Brazil(States of Espírito Santoand São Paulo).
Etymology. The specific epithet atlanticarefers to the distribution of the species in areas of the Atlantic Forest, eastern Brazil.
Comments. Neopleurophora atlanticais a very distinct species, with a typical hypopygial and phallic morphology, with the shape of the epiphallus, epandrial right posterior margin and left hypandrial lobe being unique in the genus.
