Orthocephalus tenuicornis Reuter, 1876: 33. Orthocephalus tenuicornisvar. fulvipes Reuter, 1904: 14. Orthocephalus fulvipes Reuter, 1904, valid name for Orthocephalus tenuicornis(Say, 1852) ( Kerzhner and Schuh, 1998: 172).
DIAGNOSIS: Recognized by the scalelike setae covering dorsum, pleurites, and abdomen (as in figs. 22 A-C, E, 23 A, D), yellowish antennal segment I and tibia, dark brown hemelytra (fig. 2), aedeagus with two spicules, long spicule straight, characteristically twisted basally and apically, short spicule curved, as though clawshaped, half as long as long spicule (fig. 7), female genitalia with medial sclerites almost straight, abruptly tapering apically, somewhat twisted basally, distinctly twin-coned, and somewhat longer than sclerotized ring (fig. 15). Most easily confused with O. sefrensisand O. saltatorin the external characters, male and female genitalia. Both species differ from O. fulvipesin the dark brown to black coloration of antennal segment I. In addition, the long spicule in the aedeagus of O. fulvipesis somewhat curved, whereas that of O. saltatoris not twisted (compare figs. 8 and 9). Females are also similar to O. bivittatusbut that species differs in having distinctly longer medial sclerites (fig. 14). The pale females with yellowish coxae and femora can be confused in external characters with females of O. modarresibut can be distinguished from that species by the presence of medial sclerites, which are lacking in O. modarresi(fig. 15).
REDESCRIPTION: Male: Macropterous; length 4.6–5.5. COLORATION (fig. 2): Head:Dark brown; vertex with spot near inner margin of each eye, sometimes barely visible, posterior margin of each eye with yellowish or pale brown stripe; maxillary plate often with pale brown or yellowish stripe below antennal fossa; antennal segment I yellowish, with darker base, segment II dark brown, yellowish at base, segments III and IV pale brown; labium dark brown. Thorax:Pronotum and pleurites dark brown; evaporatorium at least partly yellowish; scutellum dark brown; femora dark brown, sometimes with yellowish apices; tibiae yellowish with darkened apices and bases, tarsi dark brown; hemelytra dark brown to black; membrane uniformly pale brown. SURFACE AND VESTITURE: As in O. bivittatus(see figs. 22 A-C, E, 23 A, D). STRUCTURE AND MEASUREMENTS: Body 3.2–3.5× as long as width of pronotum. Head:Shape of head and eye similar to O. bivittatus(as in figs. 20 B, 21 A, G); head 1.1–1.2× as wide as high; vertex 1.8–2.3× as wide as eye; eye located at a small distance from anterior pronotal margin; antennal fossa located close to inferior margin of eyes; antennal segment I longer than diameter of eye; antennal segment II only weakly incrassate, cylindrical, 0.8–1.1× as long as basal width of pronotum, 1.0–1.4× as long as width of head; labium reaching middle coxa. Thorax:Pronotum 1.6–2.3× as wide as long and 1.1–1.4× as wide as head, with posterior margin slightly concave or straight, lateral margins of pronotum not carinate, calli slightly raised; hind femur relatively narrow, approximately 1.5× as wide as middle femur. GENITALIA: Aedeagus (fig. 7) with two spicules, long spicule as long as dorsal wall of theca, straight, twisted along axis at base and apex; short spicule claw-shaped, gradually curved, approximately half as long as long spicule; endosoma usually with small sclerotized area near base of short spicule, sometimes this area indistinct; parameres as in fig. 11. Female:Brachypterous; length 3.8–5.1. COLORATION: Similar to male; but sometimes antennal segment II yellowish with darkened apex, forecoxa dark, rarely orange with darker stripes and femora sometimes yellowish or orange with darker apex. SURFACE AND VESTITURE: As in male. STRUCTURE: Body 2.4– 3.7× as long as width of pronotum. Head:1.1–1.2× as wide as high; vertex 2.2–2.8× as wide as eye; antennal segment II 0.8–1.2× as long as basal width of pronotum, 0.8–1.3× as long as width of head. Thorax:Pronotum 1.8–2.3× as wide as long and 0.9–1.2× as wide as head; length of hemelytra ranging from reaching abdominal tergum VII to reaching tergum IX, cuneus slightly delimited, claval commissure as long as inner claval margin, posterior and lateral margins of hemelytra rounded, rarely posterior margin truncate. GENITA- LIA: Sclerotized rings comparatively large, oval, medial sclerites almost straight, abruptly tapering apically, somewhat twisted basally, distinctly twin-coned, and somewhat longer and distinctly narrower than sclerotized ring (fig. 15); posterior wall of bursa copulatrix with trapeziform sclerite uniformly sclerotized, incision on the anterior margin narrow and not reaching middle of sclerite, anterior angles of this sclerite somewhat dentate, posterior margin without sclerites (as in fig. 18, bivittatus); vulva with curved sclerites forming a circle (as in fig. 19, vittipennis).
DISTRIBUTION: This species has Mediterranean-Iranian distribution. It spans north to Italy, France, and Greece, south to Algeria, Tunisia, Israel, Iraq, and Iran, and east to Azerbaijanand Iran.
HOST: Unknown.
DISCUSSION: This species is very similar to O. saltatorand O. sefrensis. Refer to the corresponding section of O. sefrensisfor discussion of the difficulties with the separation of these species.
