New Central American and Mexican Enoclerus Gahan (Coleoptera: Cleridae: Clerinae): Part II Rifkind, Jacques Zootaxa 2012 3397 1 27 Rifkind Rifkind [151,506,907,934] Insecta Cleridae Enoclerus Animalia Coleoptera 5 6 Arthropoda species fibrillatus sp. nov.    Typespecimen. Holotypemale: México, Jalisco, Autlán, Res. de la Biosfera Sierra Manantlán, Est. Cientifica La Joyas, 19° 35' 443" N, 104° 16' 468" W, 29–viii–2001, Col. V. H. Toledo. Holotypedeposited in CIUM.   Diagnosis.Separable from congeners by its unique pattern of elytral fasciae and the banding on its legs. It appears most similar to some specimens of the Central American species  E. whiteheadi. The latter, however, have the legs concolorous rather than annulated. Interestingly, the gestaltof the new species recalls several species of Mexican  PeloniumSpinola, a genus in the Enopliinae, another clerid subfamily altogether. With their variegated brown and testaceous elytral patterning and annulated legs (see Barr 2005, for example), these species are presumably cryptic upon the lichen covered or fire-scarred bark upon which they rest.   Description ( Holotype).Length: 10.0 mm. Color: piceous, variegated; mouthparts, clypeus (and a rectangulate "notch" into front), antennae, pronotal arch (in part), pronotal collar (in part), tarsi, posterior margin of 5th visible abdominal sternite, 6th abdominal sternite, and 6th abdominal tergite, testaceous to reddish–testaceous; pronotum with a pair of joined triangluate reddish markings at middle posterior of disk, and an oblique, irregularly U–shaped reddish marking on each side anteriorly; elytra ( Fig. 5) with 3 pairs of transverse, pale testaceous markings as follows: an irregular subsinuate, moderately narrow fascia subbasally, narrowly complete to the anterior margin on the discal side of the darkened umbones, almost complete to the lateral margin below the umbones, incomplete to the suture internally; a transverse, irregularly margined fascia just anterior to the middle, broader laterally where it is complete to the margins, narrower internally where it is just interrupted before the suture, bearing three small irregular brownish maculae above; a narrower, transverse fascia at posterior 3/8, broader laterally where it attains the margin, narrower and irregularly undulatory internally, complete to suture. Elytral apices narrowly pale; femora and tibiae pale testaceous, each femur completely or incompletely circled with 3 sets of narrow, irregular dark bands, each tibia with a broader dark band at middle. Head: antennae elongate, loosely composed; club gradually expanded; eyes rather large, protuberant; ocular notch shallow and broad; cranium finely, rather densely punctate and subrugose, inconspicuously clothed with fine golden setae of moderate length. Pronotum: a little longer than broad, narrower than elytra at base; transverse impression deeply incised, oblique, narrowly V–shaped at middle; sides posterior to transverse impression broadly arcuate and convex; pronotal collar broad, including deep prebasal depression; disk broadly flattened (and slightly concave) above; surface very sparsely, irregularly and finely punctate (a little more coarsely punctate anteriorly), sparsely setose as on head, with a few longer, erect, pale setae in addition. Elytra: elongate (a little less than 2Xas long as broad), broadest at about posterior 1/3; sides subsinuate anteriorly, oblique from middle, then broadly, convergently rounded posteriorly to separately rounded, rather deeply dehiscent apices; basal tumescences obsolete; humeri pronounced, subcarinate; surface densely, finely punctate (punctures dark against pale bands), and transversely, shallowly subrugose, rather sparsely and inconspicuously clothed with short, fine, suberect brownish setae, and fewer longer, erect, mostly pale setae. Mesosternum: posterior median process not elevated. Metasternum: obscurely rugulose; sparsely, finely setose; anterior median process not elevated. Abdomen: shining; coarsely, shallowly punctate/rugulose, sparsely setose; visible sternite 5 broadly, arcuately emarginate posteriorly; visible sternite 6 rounded at posterior angles, posterior margin subsinuate, shorter than visible tergite 6, which is convex ventrally, with sides obliquely tapering and hind margin subtruncate.   Etymology. The specific name is derived from "ventricular fibrillation," a heart condition that produces an electrocardiogram waveform that is similar to the elytral bands decorating the new species.   Distribution.Known only from the typelocality, an area of rich species diversity. The Estación Científica Las Joyas is located within the Manantlán-Las Joyas Zone in the Reserva de la Biosfera de Manantlán. Las Joyas occupies an area of 1245 ha; the topography is irregular, and the altitude ranges from 1560 mto 2240 m( Cuevas 1994). According to Victor H. Toledo (personal communication), the vegetation at the station is cloud forest, with some trees reaching 40 min height.
