A Nearctic species, but with a few records from the Neotropical Region, whose adults are usually found on Artiodactyla(several families), Carnivora(several families), and Perissodactyla: Equidae; nymphs and larvae are commonly recovered from Rodentia(several families). All parasitic stages have also been collected from Mammalia(several orders) and less often from Galliformes: Phasianidae; immature stages have been found on Caprimulgiformes: Apodidae, Passeriformes(several families), and Squamata: Agamidae. Dermacentor variabilisis a very frequent parasite of humans.
