(left hand specimen), PRC-455021 image!).   Senecio paludosusvar. leucophyllus(Candolle) Láng, nom. nud., in sched.( McNeill et al.2012, ICN Art. 38.1) (L-212592!, LE!).   Stem± arachnoid, sometimes lanate in the upper half and glabrescent in the lower half. Cauline leavesweakly arachnoid to floccose above, ± tomentose-lanate beneath. Involucral bractssparsely arachnoid to lanate. Acheneswith scattered trichomes on the upper half, rarely almost glabrous. Chromosome number: 2 n=40 ( Váchová 1974: 18, sub  S. paludosus, Letz et al.1999: 47, sub  S. paludosusvar. tomentosus).  Iconography: — Gmelin (1770–1774: fig. 15-1, as  S. lanatus); Reichenbach (1853: fig. 974-2, sub  S. paludosusvar. tomentosus); Roldugin (1966: 155, fig. 17-4, sub  S. tataricus); Konechnaya (1994: 61, pl. 5, fig. 3, sub  S. tataricus); Hodálová (2003: 76, fig. 2C); Marhold et al.(2003: 374, fig. 3).   Distribution and habitat: — Belarus, Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, Kazakhstan, Romania  *, Russia, Slovakia?, Ukraine; marshes, banks of the rivers, edge of lakes, damp places, on silts, slimes, mud; elevations of 10–90 m( Figure 15).  Phenology: —Flowering from June to September.   Discussion: —This taxon also presents variability in the indumentum of its leaves, i.e., the populations from central Europe are completely lanate beneath, while those from Russiaare usually floccose. These specimens might be confused with those forms of  S. paludosussubsp. paludosusthat display floccose leaves beneath, but for the broader leaves ( 1–4.4 cm) and the achenes with only trichomes on the upper part that help to distinguish  S. paludosussubsp. lanatus.  Marhold et al.(2003)lectotypified  S. sadleriwith a Sadler’s collection, however the original handwriting does not seem to belong to Sadler, nor the posterior annotation in red ink. Taking into account that Sadler acknowledged Láng in the original description, both handwritings could have been made by Láng. On the other hand, the Láng’s collection from Tibiscum (Theiss in German) identified as “  S. paludosusvar. leucophyllusDC.” is not considered original material. Šída, kindly informed us that till now the voucher is oddly not located. Nonetheless, we found one isolectotypeat JE that corresponds to  S. paludosussubsp. lanatus. Based on the available original material, and despite the fact that this name was usually subordinated to subsp. paludosus, we consider more appropriate to include the name  S. ripariusas a synonym of  S. paludosussubsp. lanatus. Moreover, we question that the mentioned type material designated by Marhold et al.(2003)corresponds to the original material. According to the label information of the isolectotype“a me anno 1819 inagro halensi detectus & in Sched. Cr. 482 descriptus”, it likely seems that the specimen was collected after the publication of the name  S. riparius, and therefore, it could not be designated as lectotype. According to Euro+Med PlantBase (2006+, http://ww2.bgbm.org/EuroPlusMed/PTaxonDetailOccurrence.asp?NameId=7000832&PTRefFk=7000000, accessed 18 March 2014), this taxon grows in Romaniaand its presence in Slovakiais questionable. We have not studied material from these regions, thus, Romaniaappear in the distribution with an asterisk and Slovakiawith a question mark.
