Abscondita berembun Nada View in CoL sp. nov.
Figs 101−113 View FIGURES 101–107 View FIGURES 108–113
Types. Holotype male, paratype female (mating pair), 4 paratype ♂, 2 ♀. MALAYSIA. Negeri Sembilan: Gunung Berembun , 1000 m a.s.l., 10.vii.2015, B. Nada, mating pair# ( GB 1000 Mating); 3 ♂, ♀ ( GB 1000) ( FRIM). Pahang: Fraser’s Hill, Bishop Trail, 13.iv.2016, B. Nada, ♂ ( B 4I) ( FRIM). Perak: Gunung Liang 1400 m a.s.l., 18.vi.2015, B. Nada, ♀ ( GN1400 ) ( FRIM). # = killed fixed and preserved in 70% ethanol.
Diagnosis. 8.0–8.5 mm long. One of three species of Abscondita with pale yellowish or very pale brown dorsum, and having both black elytral apices and black abdominal tergites 7, 8. Distinguished from Abs. chinensis by its slightly larger size ( chinensis is 5.7–8.3 mm long), the pale or diffuse brown colouring of V5 (that of chinensis is usually very dark brown to black), and the aedeagal sheath sternite which is terminated by a narrow lobe (that of chinensis is terminated by a wide lobe). Female macropterous. Larva unknown.
Male. 8.0–8.5 mm long (see comment below). Colour: ( Figs 101−109 View FIGURES 101–107 View FIGURES 108–113 ) dorsal surface very pale yellow with elytral apices black (specimens are ethanol preserved and the semitransparency of the elytra reveal darker markings on thorax and dorsal abdomen; elytron colour determined by pulling it to one side see Fig. 103 View FIGURES 101–107 ); head, antennae and palpi dark brown, head almost black between eyes; ventral surface of thorax orange yellow; legs with orange yellow coxae, trochanters and femora, dark brown tibiae and tarsi; all abdominal tergites dark brown and the dorsal striped appearance of the abdomen through the semitransparent elytra is due to the alternation of dark tergite with pale intersegmental membrane ( Figs 102 View FIGURES 101–107 , 109 View FIGURES 108–113 ); T7, 8 protrude beyond the elytral apices and are black; dorsally reflexed margins of all ventrites but V7 dark brown; ventrite colour variable: 2 males (including male of mating pair) with pale yellow ventrites and V5 with small lateral brown patches; one male with V5 having irregular brown markings slightly paler in the middle, V4 with brown markings at sides widely, and V3 with brown markings at sides, narrowly (e.g. Figs 105, 107 View FIGURES 101–107 ); one male with similar markings except median posterior margin of V5 is widely yellow, and V3 has no darker markings. Head: large, almost as wide as width across anterior portion of prothorax; GHW/ maximum PNW 0.8; deeply depressed between eyes; GHW/SIW 7; ASD <ASW; apical labial palpomere with inner edge dentate (up to 4 teeth). Abdomen ( Figs 108, 109 View FIGURES 108–113 ). Aedeagal sheath ( Fig. 110 View FIGURES 108–113 ) terminated by a transverse narrow sclerotized bar with rounded ends and produced in the middle narrowly; apex of the sheath turns upward and is not visible from beneath, and is slightly emarginated with acute short corners; with side pieces beside the margins of the tergite indicating the possibility of a transverse tergite piece (not observed). Aedeagus: ( Figs 111−113 View FIGURES 108–113 ).
Female. ( Figs 101, 104 View FIGURES 101–107 ) 8.3 mm long. Colour: coloured as for male abdominal ventrites; one female has all ventrites pale yellow except for lateral brown markings on V5; female of mating pair has diffuse brown markings in V5, and lateral brown markings in V3, 4; LO in V6 white; V7, 8 dingy brown semitransparent; V7 with underlying fat body in concentrated patches at sides of the median emargination; anterior apodeme of V8 with brown markings along side visible beneath V7 and colour may confuse interpretation of outline of V7; dorsal abdomen brown with T7 black, and T8 black with irregularly yellow posterior half. Reproductive system not investigated.
Etymology. The name of the mountain where this species was collected is used as a noun in apposition.
Remarks. Length of these specimens taken as median length of pronotum plus maximum length of elytron. The rather large head and the last two segments of the abdomen which protrude beyond the elytral apices in all specimens were eliminated from the measurement so the overall apparent length will appear considerably longer than the figures given.
