TRAPELUS TOURNEVILLEI (LATASTE, 1880)

1880 Agama tournevillei Lataste, Le Naturaliste, Paris , 2: 325. – Terra typica: Ouargla (Wargla?), Algérie.

Holotype: BMNH 1920.1 .20.1241.

Diagnosis: A medium-sized, slender Trapelus with large gular pouch. Head longer than in other African Trapelus species. Dorsal scales equal in size, strongly keeled but not mucronate, no intermixed larger scales.

Taxonomic note: This species was formerly regarded as a subspecies of T. flavimaculatus . The holotype is mentioned as lost from the Paris collection ( MNHN) by Brygoo (1988), but present in the London collection ( BMNH). The clear distinctness of this species is supported by many authors (e.g. Schleich et al., 1996; Sindaco & Jeremčenko, 2008) and in this publication.
