= Amaranthus tricolor Linnaeus (1753: 990) .

Type (lectotype designated by Townsend 1974: 14):—ASIA. Habitat in India, Herb. Linn. No. 1117.7 (LINN [digital image!], image of the lectotype is available at http://linnean-online.org/11633/).

Nomenclatural notes:—The var. rotundifolius was proposed by Moquin-Tandon (1849: 261) to separate forms of Am. gangeticus with “foliis subrotondis obtusissimis, spicâ terminalis brevissimâ” (diagnosis). A collection (“ A. rotundifolius herb. Paris.! In herb. Desf.”) was cited in the protologue. I found at P (barcode 04021948) a specimen included in the Desfontaines’ collection, which bears a plant cultivated in the “Hert. Paris” as reported in the label. This plant morphologically matches with the diagnosis. This specimen is here designated as the lectotype of the name Amaranthus gangeticus var. rotundifolius .

Taxonomical notes:—According to the current concept in Amaranthus (see Mosyakin & Robertson 2003, Iamonico 2014a, 2015) the var. rotundifolius can be synonymyzed with the high variable Am. tricolor .
