Spermophagus subflavidus var. insuturatus Pic, 1902: 172 (desc., distr.). For review of literature, see Ribeiro-Costa et al. (2018).

Types. This species was recognized using the original description and the works of Ribeiro-Costa ( Ribeiro-Costa 1995; Kingsolver & Ribeiro-Costa 1997; Ribeiro-Costa et al. 2018), where the male genitalia is illustrated. The type material of A. insuturatus as well as of its synonyms were examined by Kingsolver & Ribeiro-Costa (1997). Readers are referred to Ribeiro-Costa et al. (2018) for a full synonymic list.

Diagnosis ( Figs 24 View FIGURES 22–27 , 93 View FIGURES 91–96 , 99 View FIGURES 97–102 ). Amblycerus insuturatus is characterized by the median lobe of male genitalia about 5.0 times as long as its greatest width at apical region ( Figs 93 View FIGURES 91–96 , 99 View FIGURES 97–102 ); internal sac in the apical region with a pair of hollow, ovoid, tuberculate sclerites and with median wishbone sclerite. Amblycerus insuturatus is similar externally to A. goianensis Santos & Ribeiro-Costa , sp. n., which differs by the indistinct frontoclypeal suture (distinct in A. goianiensis Santos & Ribeiro-Costa , sp. n.), cervical boss with three setae (four setae in A. goianiensis Santos & Ribeiro-Costa , sp. n.), ventrite V almost as long as ventrite IV (almost two times as long as ventrite IV in A. goianiensis Santos & Ribeiro-Costa , sp. n.), internal sac of male genitalia in the apical region with a pair of ovoid sclerites (subtriangular sclerites in A. goianiensis Santos & Ribeiro-Costa , sp. n.), unpaired median wishbone sclerite (subtrapezoidal in A. goianiensis Santos & Ribeiro-Costa , sp. n.).

Redescription. Measurements. BL: 10.7 mm; BW: 5.5 mm.

Integument color ( Figs 11 View FIGURES 9–14 , 37 View FIGURES 35–40 , 80 View FIGURES 78–83 ). Pronotum, elytra and abdomen red, head and ventral region entirely dark red.

Vestiture ( Figs 11 View FIGURES 9–14 , 37 View FIGURES 35–40 , 50 View FIGURES 48–53 , 80 View FIGURES 78–83 ). Body covered with orange setae. Pronotum with setae uniformly distributed or forming two dense median patches ( Fig. 50 View FIGURES 48–53 ). Elytra orange, sometimes with gray setae along interestriae margins ( Fig. 11 View FIGURES 9–14 ). Scutellum light yellow. Pygidium with median stripe of light-yellow setae ( Fig. 80 View FIGURES 78–83 ).

Head ( Fig. 24 View FIGURES 22–27 ). Frons covered with fine and moderately dense coarse punctures, without frontal carina. Eyes distant from each other anteriorly, ocular index: 4.4; ocular sinus: 1.1 and postocular lobe about 0.3 the eye length. Antennae not reaching anterior margin of hindcoxae, serrate from antennomeres 4–10 ( Fig. 37 View FIGURES 35–40 ); antennomere 7 about 1.7 longer than wide, last antennomere subelliptic. Frontoclypeal suture indistinct. Clypeus covered with only moderately coarse punctures except at apex. Labrum with few fine punctures on basal margin. Prothorax ( Fig. 50 View FIGURES 48–53 ). Pronotum trapezoidal with lateral margins slightly curved, covered laterally by coarse and dense punctures ( Fig. 50 View FIGURES 48–53 ); lateral carina almost reaching the posterior margin of pronotum; cervical boss with three setae; cervical sulcus conspicuous behind eyes. Prosternal process longer than anterior coxae, gently arched between coxae and slightly constricted between coxae. Meso- and metathorax ( Figs 11 View FIGURES 9–14 , 37 View FIGURES 35–40 , 65, 66). Scutellum about 1.5 longer than wide, tridentate, median tooth longer than the lateral ones (Figs 65, 66). Elytra with striae strongly impressed, at basal third striae 1–6 with punctures more isolated, all striae free apically ( Fig. 11 View FIGURES 9–14 ). Metepisternum with moderately coarse and sparse punctures ( Fig. 37 View FIGURES 35–40 ); metepisternal sulcus with transverse axis gently oblique or straight; the longitudinal axis about half the length of metepisternum. Metaventrite not prominent in lateral view, without punctures and median sulcus about as half as long as metaventrite ( Fig. 37 View FIGURES 35–40 ). Metacoxae with coarse punctures ( Fig. 37 View FIGURES 35–40 ). Hindtibia with lateral spur about 1.9 times the length of median spur ( Fig. 37 View FIGURES 35–40 ). Basal tarsomere about 1.6 the length of the lateral spur and 3.0 times the length median spur. Abdomen ( Figs 37 View FIGURES 35–40 , 80 View FIGURES 78–83 ). Ventrites without moderately coarse punctures ( Fig. 37 View FIGURES 35–40 ); last ventrite almost as long as the ventrite IV. Pygidium with apical margin rounded and with dense and moderately coarse punctures ( Fig. 80 View FIGURES 78–83 ).

Male genitalia ( Figs 93 View FIGURES 91–96 , 99 View FIGURES 97–102 ). Median lobe of male genitalia about 5.0 times as long as its greatest width at apical region ( Fig. 93 View FIGURES 91–96 ). Ventral valve with lateral margins almost straight and acuminate apex, dorsal valve subtriangular, with lateral margins almost straight, rounded apically. Internal sac in the apical region with a pair of hollow, ovoid, tuberculate sclerites ( Fig. 93 View FIGURES 91–96 ). Median region with a pair of blades serrate at lateral margins and apex and with unpaired wishbone sclerite. Basal region with several small denticles close to ejaculatory duct. Tegmen with moderate rounded emargination between enlarged lateral lobes ( Fig. 99 View FIGURES 97–102 ). Female. Similar to male except for ventrite V not emarginate and pygidium with apical margin bilobed.

Distribution ( Fig. 118 View FIGURES 117–118 ). Puerto Rico, Suriname, French Guiana, Brazil (Pará, Mato Grosso, Goiás, Ceará, Rio Grande do Norte, Rio de Janeiro), Bolivia.

Life History. Amblycerus insuturatus and two species of birds, Ara ararauna ( Linnaeus, 1758) and Ara chloropterus (Gray, 1859) were recognized as pre-dispersal seed predators of the Buchenavia tomentosa (Combretaceae) by Farias et al. (2015). According to the authors, the seed beetles were found in fruits collected directly from the crown of trees and about 2.79% of the fruits had signs of emergence, with endosperm and embryo completely consumed.
