Type locality. Suape Beach, Cabo de Santo Agostinho, Pernambuco, Brazil.
Diagnosis. Lower lip with lateral lobe longer than medial lobe. Maxilla 1 inner plate without row of slender setae. Mandible with palp short and slender. Gnathopod 1 carpal lobe subacute; carpus shorter than propodus; palm entire, without midmedial spine, with a robust setae defining palm; dactylus subequal in length to palm. Gnathopod 2 basis anterodistal lobe large and rounded, with 5 slender setae; carpus shorter than propodus; propodus palm extremely acute, entire, without midmedial spine, occupying almost entire posterior margin, and densely setose; dactylus shorter in length to palm. Pereopod 3 and 4 basis narrow; merus narrow. Pereopods 5 strongly prehensile; merus subrectangular. Uropod 1 peduncle distoventral process present and blunt. Uropod 3 peduncle with 4 distal robust setae, outer ramus subequal to inner ramus, without patch of small conical lateral denticles; inner ramus with 2 distal robust setae. Telson distally truncate, apical cusps small.
Description. Based on Holotype male 3.5 mm, MOUFPE 15.513. Head 1.2 × longer than deep. Mandible molar with 4 or 5 robust setae in the accessory setal row; palp slender, short, article 2 longer than article 3 (1.2 ×), article 3 longer than article 1 (2.0 x) with 3 slender setae apically. Lower lip mandibular lobe with curved margins, subacute apically. Maxilla 1 palp with 8 apical robust setae, inner plate lacking setae. Maxilla 2 inner plate narrower than outer. Maxilliped outer plate with reduced setation (robust setae small).
Pereon. Gnathopod 1 without densely setose margins; coxa less deep than gnathopod 2 coxa, anteroventral angle produced, distoventral margin rounded, anterior margin concave, ventral margin with a row of small setules; basis longer than coxa, with sparse slender setae, posterodistal lobe small and truncate, with 2 slender seta; merus produced to form a small, rounded distoventral lobe, anterior margin with setae absent; carpus longer than merus, subtriangular, anterior margin with slender setae only; propodus narrow (length 2.5 × width), subrectangular; palm with a small denticle and 1 defining robust seta; dactylus inner margin denticulate. Gnathopod 2 coxa ventral margin with a row of small setules; basis longer to coxa, with 2 slender setae on posterior margin; merus produced to form a short, subacute distoventral lobe, anterior margin with 1 seta present; carpus subequal to merus, subtriangular, anterior margin with 2 slender setae only; propodus broad (length 2.0 × width), ovoid, not produced into an anterodistally setose lobe; dactylus tapering evenly, acute, inner margin denticulate. Pereopod 5 basis with marginal slender setae; distal articles slender; propodus slightly expanded distally, subrectangular, with 4 distal simple striated robust setae; dactylus strongly curved. Pereopods 6–7 missing.
Pleon. Uropod 2 peduncle with 3 robust setae, setal fringe absent; outer ramus shorter than inner ramus; inner ramus with 3 marginal and 3 apical robust setae, slender setae absent; outer ramus with 8 marginal robust setae, slender setae absent. Uropod 3 peduncle longer than broad (2.2 × width), long with respect to the rami length (2.2 ×), marginal robust setae absent, with 2 marginal slender setae, with 6 distal slender setae; inner ramus with 1 distal slender seta. Telson with apical slender and plumose setae.
Female (sexually dimorphic characters). Based on paratype, female, 2.9 mm, MOUFPE 15.514. Gnathopod 1 subequal in size to gnathopod 2; coxa subequal in size to gnathopod 2 coxa; basis shorter than coxa; merus not produced to form a short, subacute distoventral lobe; carpus shorter than propodus (0.89 ×); propodus subrectangular; palm with midmedial spine. Gnathopod 2 basis posterodistal lobe small and round, with 1 slender seta; carpus longer than merus, shorter than propodus (0.6 ×); propodus narrow (length 2.3 x width); palm acute without tooth defining palm, defined by 1 robust seta.
Etymology. The species is named suapensis in reference to its type locality – Suape Beach, Pernambuco, Brazil.
Distribution. Known only from the type locality, Suape Beach (8°23′03.31′′S – 34°57′20.64′′W), Cabo de Santo Agostinho, Pernambuco, Brazil.
Remarks. Ampithoe suapensis sp. nov., in having a distoventral process on the peduncle of uropod 1, is related to A. divisura Shoemaker, 1933 , A. kava Myers, 1985 , A. kaneohe Barnard, 1970 , A. kaneohe navosa Barnard, 1970 , A. poipu ( Barnard, 1970) , A. meganae Peart, 2007 , A. parakava Peart, 2007 , A. rotunda Peart, 2007 . However, A. suapensis sp. nov. differs from A. divisura , A. kava and A. parakava mainly in the shape of propodus of male gnathopod 2, which is ovoid with palm acute, entire and lacking blunt process defining palm. It is separated from A. meganae in having short palp of mandible, gnathopod 2 basis lacking robust setae on anterodistal lobe, propodus palm not defined by spine or robust setae, pereopod 5 propodus with 4 robust setae (vs. only one).
Ampithoe supensis sp. nov. can be distinguished from A. kaneohe Barnard, 1970 View in CoL and A. kaneohe navosa ( Myers, 1985) View in CoL , by the male gnathopod 2 propodus lacking a long tuft of setae near anterodistal angle, palm densely setose (vs. weakly setose). It also differs from A. rotunda View in CoL in having short palp of mandible, a less developed anterodistal lobe in the basis of male gnathopod 2, propodus palm not defined by spine, and in lacking robust setae on anterior margin of pereopod 5.
