Ancylis upupana ( Treitschke, 1835)

Phoxopteris upupana Treitschke, 1835: 120 . TL: Germany.

Diagnosis. The species can be separated from its congeners by the forewing overlaid with dark grayish fuscous, except for the blackish interspaces between the costal strigulae. Ancylis upuana is similar to A. uncella (D. & S.) but can be distinguished by the absence of the gray dorsal patch of the forewing and by the position of the ventral projection of the valva in the male genitalia.

Re­description. Adult: Wingspan 18–19 mm. Forewing with costa gently arched to apex, and apex shortly protruded; basal and median fasciae confluent, ground color dark brown mixed with reddish brown, almost uniform from base to apical field, except apical area, which is somewhat reddish brown. Hindwing light reddish brown, slightly darker in costal and apical areas.

Male genitalia ( Fig. 13): Uncus bifurcate, slightly longer than that of A. uncella (D. & S.), apices pointed apically. Socii broad, long, with long dense hairs. Valva well sclerotized, costa slightly arched to rounded apex; sacculus slender, well sclerotized; ventral margin of valva slightly concave at basal 1/4 between base of valva and small subtriangular projection at base of cucullus; cucullus slightly broadened medially, slightly narrowed terminally. Aedeagus thick, long, vesica with a bundle of about 200 cornuti.

Female genitalia ( Fig. 17): Papillae anales moderate. Apophyses anteriores very long, 3 times length of apophyses posteriores. Ostium bursae broad with wide opening; antrum well sclerotized around its entrance. Ductus bursae wide, moderate. Corpus bursae round, large, with two large, different­sized signa.

Distribution. China (new record); Korea; Japan; Russia; Europe.

Host plants. Ulmus sp. (Ulmaceae) , Betula sp. (Betulaceae) , and Quercus sp. (Fagaceae) in Europe (Hannemann 1961).
