Apogonia moesta ( Germar, 1824)

Melolontha moesta Germar, 1824: 122

Apogonia moesta: Burmeister, 1855: 25

Apogonia moesta (attributed to Knoch): Schönfeldt, 1890: 170

Apogonia moesta (attributed to Burmeister): Gemminger and Harold, 1869: 1156 (catalogue); Ritsema, 1891: 95 (catalogue); Brenske, 1896: 150; Barlow, 1899: 252; Dalla Torre, 1912: 140 (catalogue); Sabatinelli, 1993: 601 (catalogue)

Type locality: "America septentrionali".

Distribution: India ( Brenske, 1896), Indonesia (Sumatra), Malaysia ( Malacca) (Burmeister, 1855).

Remark: This species is described in Germar’s book (1824), who attributed it to Knoch. However, Knoch never described such species. Consequently, Germar should be treated as the author of A. moesta , and 1824 as the year of publication. This species was also erroneously attributed to Burmeister by Gemminger and Harold (1869), Brenske (1896), Dalla Torre (1912), and several subsequent authors. The record of A. moesta from Japan ( Schönfeldt, 1890) refers to A. bicarinata (see Sawada, 1950a).
