Apsilocera dentata Mitroiu & van Achterberg, sp. n.
( Figs 4 View FIGURES 1 – 6 , 22 View FIGURES 19 – 24 )
Type material. Holotype, ♀ (RMNH), “S. VIETNAM: Lam Dong, Bidoup Nuiba N.P., nr Da Lat, Mal. trap 19-23, 1680– 1700 m, 12–19.x.2005, C. v. Achterberg & R. de Vries, RMNH’05”.
Diagnosis. Head slightly transverse in anterior view, with a row of teeth near each eye, the tooth near eye being the largest; clypeal margin with a narrow projection, which is slightly emarginate in the middle ( Fig. 22 View FIGURES 19 – 24 ); each funicular segment with one row of sensilla; clava brown ( Fig. 4 View FIGURES 1 – 6 ); distal tooth of mandible rounded ( Fig. 22 View FIGURES 19 – 24 ). Mesosoma only slightly arched dorsally; fore coxa mainly dark, mid and hind coxae pale yellow, the latter with a small dark spot basally; fore wing hyaline ( Fig. 4 View FIGURES 1 – 6 ). Metasoma dorsally brown except small pale basal depression.
Description. Holotype female, body length: 2.5 mm. Colour ( Fig. 4 View FIGURES 1 – 6 ): head dark blue green; eyes reddish, ocelli whitish; scape orange, paler proximally and ventrally; pedicel orange, dorsally brown; flagellum uniformly brown; mandible brown, teeth blackish. Mesonotum and propodeum dark bluish, rest of mesosoma dark olive green; wings hyaline; tegula orange; venation light brown; fore coxa mainly dark, mid and hind coxae pale yellow, the latter with a small dark spot basally; femora and tibiae pale yellow, tarsi slightly darker, their tips brown. Metasoma dorsally dark brown, somewhat paler towards apex, with a small yellowish depression at base of the first tergite; laterally and ventrally light brown to yellow; ovipositor sheaths brown.
Head slightly transverse in anterior view, with a row of teeth near each eye, the tooth near eye being the largest; vertex high, in anterior view distinctly arched between posterior ocelli; gena moderately receding towards mouth, not hollowed at mouth corner ( Fig. 22 View FIGURES 19 – 24 ); temple virtually absent; occiput straight; clypeal margin with a narrow projection, which is slightly emarginate in the middle ( Fig. 22 View FIGURES 19 – 24 ); each funicular segment with one row of dense sensilla ( Fig. 4 View FIGURES 1 – 6 ); distal tooth of mandible rounded ( Fig. 22 View FIGURES 19 – 24 ). Relative measurements—length: 25; width: 54; height: 46; POL: 13; OOL: 16; eye height: 22; eye length: 16.5; malar space: 11; mouth width: 27; distance between clypeal margin and toruli: 30; scape length: 25; pedicel length: 5; pedicel width: 3; pedicel plus flagellum: 68; F1 length: 7; F1 width: 4.5; F6 length: 7; F6 width: 5; clava length: 18; clava width: 5.
Mesosoma only slightly arched dorsally ( Fig. 4 View FIGURES 1 – 6 ); mesoscutum almost flat, central part with reticulation meshes very large; propodeum almost smooth; fore wing with basal cell bare except 3–5 scattered hairs, open below; basal vein pilose; ventral side of costal cell with one complete row of hairs, a second partially complete row, and a patch of hairs in distal part; speculum reaching parastigma; stigma elongated ( Fig. 4 View FIGURES 1 – 6 ). Relative measurements—length: 56; width: 43; height: 33; mesoscutum length: 23; scutellum length: 19; scutellum width: 21; propodeum length: 7; fore wing length: 135; fore wing width: 60; M: 34; S: 15; P: 36.
Metasoma short ovate ( Fig. 4 View FIGURES 1 – 6 ); dorsal side of first tergite with a small triangular depression at base; ovipositor sheaths slightly visible in dorsal view. Relative measurements—length: 72; width: 46; length of first tergite: 20; distance from base of metasoma to tip of hypopygium: 30.
Distribution. Vietnam.
Hosts. Unknown.
Etymology. From the Latin “ dentatus ” (with teeth), which refers to the multiple teeth present on the head.
Comments. Apsilocera dentata belongs to a group of species having distinct teeth in the upper part of the head. This species most closely resembles A. cornuta , but differs in many respects, the most obvious being the presence of a row of teeth on each side of the vertex, instead of only one tooth ( Fig. 22 View FIGURES 19 – 24 ).
