STATUS AT MADANG. First record from Madang as Atherina endrachtensis by Herre (1933: 12); specimen collected by W.-J. Chen in Madang Bay. CAS, NTUM, USNM and WAM material.

DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. Philippines and New Guinea east to Solomon Islands, south to northern Australia. Pelagic, schooling along sandy shorelines and reef margins, 0– 4 m. Transitional water and marine.

Atherinomorus lacunosus (Bloch & Schneider [ex Forster], 1801) —Hardyhead silverside

STATUS AT MADANG. New record from Madang, based on specimens observed and photographed at St. CTR 25, CTR 26. Previously reported as Atherina forskali (non Rüppell, 1838) by Herre (1933: 12). AMS and CAS material (AMS I.17069-001; CAS 28228).

DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. Red Sea, East Africa, Madagascar and Mascarenes east to Hawaiian and Tuamotu islands, north to southern Japan and Ogasawara Islands, south to Western Australia, New South Wales ( Australia) and Rapa, recently immigrated into eastern Mediterranean through Suez Canal. Pelagic, schooling along sandy shorelines and reef margins, 0– 39 m. Transitional water and marine.

STATUS AT MADANG. New record from Madang, based on specimens photographed at St. CTR 29. FRLM and WAM material (WAM P.30118-004) [material identified by Seishi Kimura].

DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. Christmas Island (eastern Indian Ocean) east to Caroline Islands and Samoa, north to southern Japan and Ogasawara Islands, south to Queensland ( Australia) and New Caledonia. Pelagic, schooling along sandy shorelines and reef margins, 0– 3 m. Marine.

Hypoatherina barnesi Schultz in Schultz, Herald, Lachner, Welander & Woods, 1953 —Barnes' silverside STATUS AT MADANG. New record from Madang, based on CSIRO material (CSIRO B.2883, B.2889). DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. East Africa east to Marshall Islands and Vanuatu, north to Ryukyu Islands, south to northern Australia. Schooling inshore, 0– 5 m. Marine.

Hypoatherina villosa ( Duncker & Mohr, 1926) —New Guinean silverside

STATUS AT MADANG. Reported from Madang as Atherina villosa in original description by Duncker & Mohr (1926: 130); subsequently reported as Atherina temmincki View in CoL by Herre (1933: 12). The status of this species is uncertain. ZMH material.

DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. Papua New Guinea: Madang Lagoon and New Britain, 0– 8 m. Marine.
