Figs. 44–47, 84, 93

Diagnosis. Vertex of male 0.13–0.17 head width, parafacial with dense fine black hairs along outer 1/2, prementum about twice as long as wide; abdominal tergites 3 to 5 each with a pair of large triangular black markings, which are almost merged on posterior half.

Description. Body length 7.6–11.0 mm.

Male. Head ( Figs. 84 View FIGURES 82 – 88 , 93 View FIGURES 91 – 97 ). With dense yellowish pruinosity on parafacial and upper fronto-orbital plate; frontal vitta black; lunule reddish brown; flagellomere 1 dark brown, its base and pedicel reddish yellow; palpus reddish yellow. Vertex 0.13–0.17 of head width; frontal vitta strongly widened anteriorly, 1–1.5 times as wide as fronto-orbital plate; parafacial nearly parallel-sided, about 2.5 times as wide as flagellomere 1; face rather well concave, facial carina low but distinct, lower margin of face weakly protruding forward; gena 0.41–0.49 times as wide as eye height, with dense black hairs; occiput flattened. Fronto-orbital plate with fine and rather long dense black hairs; parafacial with 3–4 rows of dense hairs along outer 1/2; inner vertical seta 0.6–0.7 of eye height; ocellar seta weak, 1–1.2 times as long as postocular setae; 15–16 inclinate frontal setae, lowest seta nearly level with base of antenna; vibrissa level with lower margin of face. Flagellomere 1 about twice as long as pedicel; arista plumose, total width including plumosity about 3 times as wide as flagellomere 1. Prementum broad, about twice as long as wide; palpus about as long as antenna.

Thorax. Black in ground color, with thin grayish white pruinosity; scutum with 5 longitudinal black vittae on presutural area, outer vitta about twice as wide as pruinose distance between outer and inner vittae, inner vitta about as wide as pruinose distance between median and inner vittae; scutellum black at basal 2/3 or more, with grayish white pruinosity at apex and margin. Postpronotal lobe with 4 setae, 3 basal setae standing in a straight line; 2 presutural and 3 postsutural acrostichal setae; 3 presutural and 4 postsutural dorsocentral setae; 2–3 postsutural intra-alar setae; 3–4 supra-alar setae; 2 katepisternal setae; scutellum with 1–3 pairs of short discal setae. Wing. Hyaline, brownish; tegula and basicosta dark brown; lower calypter brown; halter dark brown at apex, reddish brown at base. Relative lengths of 2nd, 3rd and 4th costal sectors approximately as 1.3:2.4:1; vein M about right-angled on its bend, bend of vein M distinctly closer to wing margin than to dm-cu crossvein (2:1), with or without a short appendix. Legs. Black, pulvilli pale yellowish. Fore claws and pulvilli slightly shorter than 5th tarsomere, fore tarsi slightly shorter than head height; fore tibia with a row of short anterodorsal setae on basal 2/3 and 1 long posterior seta; mid tibia with 2–4 anterodorsal, 2–3 posterodorsal and 1 (seldom 2) ventral setae; hind tibia with a row of rather closely set anterodorsal setae in equal size, 3–5 posterodorsal and 2 (seldom 1) ventral setae.

Abdomen. Long ovate. Brown to dark brown, only with whitish pruinosity on anterolateral and mid-dorsal portions of tergites 3 to 5, syntergite 1+2 dark brown, tergites 3 to 5 with a pair of large triangular black markings on posterior 2/3–4/5 of each tergite, these markings almost merged on posterior half and a small retro-triangular grayish pruinose marking on tergites 3 to 5). Syntergite 1+2 and tergite 3 each with 1 lateral marginal seta, without median marginal setae. Male terminalia (Figs. 44–47). Sternite 5 square, posterior lobe rounded at apex. Cerci slender and pointed at apex; surstylus weakly curved ventrally and rounded at apex in lateral view; postgonite slightly shorter than basiphallus; distiphallus long, membranous apical part slightly shorter than sclerotized basal part.

Female. Vertex about 0.3 of head width; parafacial about 3 times as wide as flagellomere 1; genal height 0.5– 0.6 of eye height; inner vertical seta about 0.75 of eye height, about 1.5 times as long as outer vertical seta; 8–9 inclinate frontal setae; 2 strong proclinate orbital setae; ocellar setae shorter than frontal setae; fronto-orbital plate and parafacial with more sparse black hairs. Antenna falling short of lower margin of face by about 1/3 length of flagellomere 1. Calypter yellowish white. Mid tibia with 2 anterodorsal, 2 posterodorsal and 1 ventral seta; hind tibia with 2 strong anterodorsal setae among closely set row of anterodorsal setae, 2 posterodorsal and 2 ventral setae. Abdomen ovate. Other characters are same as in male.

Type material. Holotype ♂, MALAYSIA, Pahang, Cameron Highlands (101°30′E, 4°30′N), Gunung Jasar, 15–27.xi.1994, T. Pape ( ZMUC). Paratypes. MALAYSIA: 2♂♂, 1♀, same data as holotype ( BLKU and ZMUC).

Etymology. The specific name is dedicated to the collector of the type specimens, Thomas Pape, for his contributions to Diptera systematics.

Distribution. Malaysia ( Malaya).

Remarks. This new species appears to be close to B. atkinsoni , but differs from it in having narrow vertex in male, parafacial with dense black hairs along outer 1/2, shorter prementum, 5 dark longitudinal thoracic vittae on scutum, and scutellum black with grayish white pruinosity at apex.
