Botria japonica Mesnil, 1957: 22 . Holotype male (CNC, examined). Type locality: Japan, Hokkaido, Sapporo.

Diagnosis. Antenna with arista at most thickened on basal half; male vertex 0.15–0.2 of head width; parafacial subequal in width to first flagellomere; gena 0.33–0.38 of eye height; male postabdomen with surstylus wide and bearing many setae in lateral view, apex with short and thick setae ventrodistally, curved inward on basal half in dorsal view; cerci rather slender and rounded apically in lateral view.

Redescription. Male. Face with whitish yellow pruinosity; parafacial, fronto-orbital plate and lower part of gena with silvery white pruinosity; frontal vitta black or dark brown; upper part of gena reddish orange; antenna entirely black or dark brown; palpus light yellow to orange, sometimes dark brown. Vertex 0.15–0.20 of head width; frontal vitta subequal in width to fronto-orbital plate at middle; parafacial subequal in width to first flagellomere; gena 0.33–0.38 of eye height; antenna with first flagellomere 3.8–4.5 times as long as pedicel and 2.3–3.0 times as long as wide; arista at most thickened on basal half.

Thoracic dorsum and pleura black in ground color with whitish gray pruinosity; scutellum orange on apical 3/ 4–4/5; apical scutellar setae usually absent, if present then divergent.

Wing. Vein M with section between crossvein dm-cu and bend 1.0–1.3 times as long as that between bend and wing margin. Relative lengths of costal sectors second, third and fourth approximately as 5: 11: 5; ultimate section of CuA1 approximately 0.2 times as long as penultimate section and approximately 0.6 times as long as crossvein dm-cu.

Legs. Femora broadly black; tibiae and tarsi orange.

Abdomen. Black in ground color, with dense whitish gray pruinosity on all terga except for syntergum 1+2.

Male postabdomen. Surstylus broad in lateral view with many setae on outer surface, apex with minute spines ventrodistally, curved inward on basal half in dorsal view; cerci rather slender and rounded apically in lateral view.

Female. Similar to male, but differing as follows: vertex wider, 0.26–0.29 of head width; antenna with scape and pedicel reddish yellow or light brown; first flagellomere short, 2.5–3.0 times as long as pedicel.

Body length. 6.1–11.2 mm.
