Description. Length (antennal base to wing tip) 2.8–3.0 mm. Head: Eye height 2.0–2.4X genal height. Two welldeveloped orbital bristles, lower at least 0.7 times as long as upper. Tarsomeres 2–5 of fore leg short and flat, more or less quadrate, tarsomeres 2, 3, and 5 equal in length at 2X length of tarsomere 1, tarsomere 4 shorter. Tarsomeres 1 and 2 of hind leg strongly swollen, second tarsomere as long as tarsomeres 3, 4, and 5 combined. Wing: Second costal sector slightly longer than third, R2+3 weakly sinuate and distinctly turned up to costa at apex.
Female abdomen: Sternite 10 continuously sclerotized along posterior and lateral margins, otherwise pale. Spermathecae oval, gradually tapered basally, length subequal to length of sternite 5. Tergite 8 not medially shortened, 1.5 times as long as tergite 7 at middle, with one pair of long posterolateral bristles. Cercus short, subequal in length and width, with a long apical bristle.
Male abdomen: Sternite 5 large, pale medially except for a narrow anterior strip and a transverse concave posteromedial patch, posteromedial portion of sternite flanked by sparse, long, thin bristles. Ventral part of sternite 6 very broad, dark, with a prominent anterior process at level of posteromedial sclerite of sternite 5. Cerci bulbous, fused in dorsal ¾, apex tapered to a nipple-like point. Surstylus with a prominent lateral ridge at base, flat in distal portion, in lateral view elongate-rectangular with a sharp anterior process. Postgonite broad basally, tapered to a narrow distal lobe ending in a large, round anteroapical club. Basiphallus short, distiphallus with a broad cylindrical base expanding out to a short, broad apex. Ring sclerite incomplete.
Type material. Holotype (male, MIZA) and 2 paratypes (13, 1Ƥ, DEBU): VENEZUELA. Merida, 1500 m, Sta. Rosa Trail, Flight Intercept Trap along spring, 24–30.iv.1988, S.A. Marshall. Other paratypes: COSTA RICA. Tapanti National Park, 1550 m, pans in fallen tree, 4.x.1999, 7–12.Oct.1999, Marshall and Buck (23, 8Ƥ, INBIO, DEBU); Monteverde Biological Station, 1550 m, 15–20.viii.1986, L. Masner (123, 10Ƥ, DEBU); VENEZUELA. Merida, Los Chorros, 1–5.v.1988, leaf debris F.I.T., S.A. Marshall (13, DEBU).
Etymology. Bregmosina ephydriformia is named for the superficial similarity between the large oral cavity characteristic of this genus and that of many flies in the family Ephydridae .
