Bulbophyllum scabratum Rchb. View in CoL f. in Ann. Bot. Syst. (Walpers) 6: 259, 1861
Replaced synonym: Cirrhopetalum caespitosum Wall. ex Lindl. , Edwards’s Bot. Reg. 24 (Misc.): 35, 1838.
Heterotypic synonyms: Bulbophyllum levinei Schltr., Repert. Spec. Nov. Regni Veg. 19: 381, 1924.
Cirrhopetalum insulsum Gagnep., Bull. Mus . Natl. Hist. Nat ., sér. 2, 22: 403, 1950. Bulbophyllum insulsum (Gagnep.) Seidenf., Dansk Bot. Ark. 29 (1): 141, 1973 (publ. 1974).
Specimens examined:— KACHIN. Putao District : 455 m, 2 Jan 1931, Kingdon-Ward 9086 ( BM) , ident. uncertain; same loc., 915 m, 11 Jan 1931, Kingdon-Ward 9123 ( BM) ; same loc., 455–610 m, 1 Aug 1937, Kingdon-Ward 12870 ( BM) ; same loc., Dec 2015, Saw Lwin KSL 1082 ( RAF) ; northeastern part: 1065 m, Feb 1912, Toppin 6265 ( K) ; Myitkyina District : 2135 m, May 1925, Forrest 26603 ( E, K) .
Distribution:— The Himalayas, northeastern India, northern Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam and southwestern, southern and southeastern China.
Notes:— Kingdon-Ward 9086 (BM) has unusually large flowers, prompting Seidenfaden to write onto the sheet “probably a new species, closest to Bulbophyllum insulsum but with considerably larger flowers”. However, given the variability of B. scabratum (in which this species is now included), it may well fall within its range of variation.
