Status at New Ireland. Originally described from New Ireland by Cuvier in Cuvier & Valenciennes (1830b: 441– 442), based on MNHN 9560 (1 syntype); also reported from Port Praslin , New Ireland by Lesson (1831: 186–187, poissons pl. 34). Specimens observed at Kavieng fish market in 2004–2005 by Jeff Kinch during CFMDP Survey; a video of a specimen taken off Nubilus Island , off southeastern New Hanover , at 3–32 m depth, St. KR 88, in 2014 (identified by Barry C. Russell).
Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 1, 2, 3.—General distribution: Red Sea, East Africa, Madagascar and western Mascarenes east to Marshall Islands and Fiji, north to southern Japan, south to off northwestern Australia and New Caledonia. Forming large aggregations at the outer edge of seaward reefs or around patch reefs, 0–50 m depth. Marine.
