While arguing against the classification of Rydberg, Greene (1906b: 238) purposefully, for the sake of the argument it seems, erected a genus from within Potentilla based on habit and inflorescence alone, and described Callionia , listing three species. Rydberg (1910) responded: “The proposing of another genus Callionia Greene was, altogether superfluous, for its type, Potentilla canadensis L., is so closely related to P. reptans that no scientist would seriously think of placing them in different genera.” This sentence has been interpreted as a type designation for Callionia (cf. Index Nominum Genericorum, Farr & Zijlstra, 1996 –). Type: Callionia canadensis (L.) Greene (basionym Potentilla canadensis L.). Callionia belongs to the Reptans clade.
