( Figs. 24 View FIGURES 1 – 24. 1 , 25 View FIGURES 25 – 48. 25 , and 63)

Calonotos acutipennis Zerny, 1931a: 242 . Lectotype hereby designated, male: [ BRAZIL, Pará, Santarém], Taperinha. With two labels: printed label “Unt. Amaz. Taperinha b. Santarem 21–30.vi. ’27 Zerny” and handwritten label “ Calonotos acutipennis Zerny type ♂”. Three paralectotypes, one male and two females. Male paralectotype with exactly the same label as the lectotype. Females with two labels each, first female with labels like those of the males and second female with a similar locality label, but from 11–20.vi. ’27.

Current combination. Calonotos acutipennis Zerny, 1931 .

Condition of the types. Lectotype. Perfect condition. Paralectotypes. Male and female from 21–3.vi.1927 also in perfect condition. Female from 11–20.vi.1927 with wings slightly worn.

Remarks. This species was described from the above-mentioned specimens.

Calonotos Hübner , [1819] is a sexually dimorphic, moderately large genus, with around 20 species, approximately half of which are part of a group of species with hyaline areas on the fore and hindwings. The limits of the species have never been examined, nor have the male-female associations, which are usually made only tentatively.

Cerda (2008) provided an illustration of the male genitalia of this species, of which he claimed to have seen the holotype (error). However, it does match the genitalia of the lectotype ( Fig. 56 View FIGURES 55 – 65. 55 ). Additionally, Cerda mentioned that he could not pair any female with the male. The female paralectotypes of C. acutipennis designated by Zerny were probably matched to the males by association with similar patterns of the hyaline areas of the hindwings, in pairs of other species of Calonotos .

Both the male and female of this species closely resemble the established concept of C. tiburtus ( Cramer, 1779) , illustrated in the original description and also by Hampson (1898, pp. 334, fig. 154) and Draudt (1915, plate 17, row i), which has Surinam as its type locality. The possibility that they are synonyms should be investigated, as it is unknown whether any types of C. tiburtus still exist.
