Taxonomy. Original description: Acanthobrama kuschakewitschi Kessler, 1872: 166 View in CoL [lower Amu Darya River, Uzbekistan; syntypes:?NMW 55337 (1), ZIN 19025 (1)].— Afghanistan synonyms: Acanthobrama bogdanowi Kessler, 1877 View in CoL ; Capoetobrama kuschakewitschi orientalis Nikolskii, 1934 View in CoL .—Revisions: Berg (1949: 799).— Illustration: Berg (1949: 800, fig. 547).
Status in Afghanistan. First record from Afghanistan by Berg (1949: 800); confirmed by Moravec and Amin (1978), Coad (1981: 9; 2014: 139; 2015: 227).—Afghanistan materials: None.
Distribution and habitat. Distribution in Afghanistan: Qundur River and Khanabad River.—General distribution: Eastern Europe.—Habitat: This species is frequently found in fast-flowing, turbid water. The species prefers the mid- and foothill zones of rivers. It is detritivorous. Freshwater.
Economic importance. Locally consumed, but of no commercial importance.
Conservation. Conservation status in Afghanistan: Unknown.—IUCN: LC (Mamilov & Karimov 2020b).— Threats: COM, CON, ABS, EUT.—Moderate sensitivity to human activities.—Not considered as a keystone species.—Decline status: Significant decline.—Low priority for conservation action.
