Cataractocoris marginiventris Usinger 1941 View in CoL : Ann. Ent. Soc. Am. 34: 13–14.
Discussion. In the original description, this species was distinguished by Usinger (1941) from C. macrocephalus by straight lateral margins of the pronotum, shorter and proportionately broader profemora, alternating light and dark coloration of the connexivum, and a wide glabrous band surrounding the venter. We have found that some of these features are variable among populations and that a combination of these and other attributes are necessary to adequately characterize the species and enable identification. Although most specimens have unambiguously straight lateral margins of the pronotum, occasional individuals are clearly concave, especially in the anterior half. The checkered appearance of the connexivum in some specimens can be subtle. The discovery of a third species further confounds identifications because it is closest in appearance to C. marginiventris .
Usinger (1941) reported this species to occur in very fast water in which it was difficult to hold a net. We collected this species in similar habitats of large rocks in fast current, on the vertical rock faces of powerful waterfalls, some of which were covered with moss and algae, and on gentle spillways (e.g., L-1392, 1393). An atypical habitat was encountered when a series of specimens was collected from a vertical metal gate in a dam at site L-1481. The metal gate was wet because water was leaking from around the perimeter and algae were present.
Diagnosis. This species can be distinguished from C. macrocephalus by the wide, yellow, glabrous marginal band on the venter; its width at the widest point on the propleuron ranged from 0.64 to 0.92 mm (mean 0.76 ± 0.01), which overlaps with that of C. shepardi . Males can be distinguished from those of C. shepardi by the rounded midline of the pygophore between the parameres ( Fig. 9 View FIGURES 6 – 9 ) and the pointed distolateral corners of the pseudoparameres (median lobes of tergum VIII) ( Fig. 8 View FIGURES 6 – 9 ). In females, ventral laterotergite VII is deeply incised distally and at least the apex tends to be deflexed so that it is oriented nearly vertically ( Fig. 7 View FIGURES 6 – 9 ), in contrast to that of C. shepardi which is not incised and angled no greater than 45 degrees ( Fig. 12 View FIGURES 10 – 14 ). Females of both species can be distinguished from those of C. macrocephalus by the apical margin of the subgenital plate with the row of dense hairs more prominent on each side of the midline, rather than continuous across the margin.
Distribution. We have collected this species on both sides of the Central Mexican Plateau from Jalisco and Veracruz south to Chiapas, and we have examined specimens from Guatemala ( Fig. 15 View FIGURE 15 b). We report the first records of this species and genus from the Mexican states of Michoacán, Morelos, Puebla, Oaxaca, and Veracruz, and the Guatemalan department of Escuintla. Usinger (1941) previously reported C. marginiventris from Guerrero.
